The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture held its 15th regular session from 19 to 23 January 2015 at FAO headquarters in Rome.

The Commission, which has 179 member countries, deals with aspects concerning the conservation, the sustainable use of genetic resources as well as access to these resources and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from their use, for the different sectors of genetic resources for food and agriculture (plant genetics, animal genetics, forestry, aquatic, microorganisms and invertebrates).

Likewise, the commission deals with cross-cutting aspects concerning these genetic resources, such as climate change, nutrition, biotechnologies and access and benefit-sharing.

The 15th session of the commission was preceded by a special event devoted to the role of genetic resources in food security, and an information seminar on the state of progress of the report on the state of biodiversity in the world.

The 15th session was chaired this year by Mr. Amar Tahiri, head of the seed and plant control division at the National Food Safety Office (ONSSA).
